DriverMetrics®

DriverMetrics® specialises in helping organisations reduce the risk of employees being involved in work-related road traffic accidents.

Our Driver Risk Index™ (DRI) risk management solution is based on over 20 years of academic research in partnership with leading organisations in the fleet, bus, HGV, police, fire and ambulance sectors.

The purpose of DriverMetrics is to develop driver risk assessment products based on the research and development work undertaken by Dr Lisa Dorn and her team at Cranfield University's Driving Research Group. DriverMetrics® is a trading division of Cranfield Engineering Innovations Ltd founded in 2005, a company wholly owned by Cranfield University.

Dr Lisa Dorn

Lisa Dorn Dr Lisa Dorn is Research Director of DriverMetrics® and Head of the Driving Research Group at Cranfield University . Dr Dorn has been conducting research in driver behaviour since 1988 for which she gained her PhD in 1992 from Aston University . Dr Dorn’s research interests are driver training and selection, human factors in driving performance, and work-related road risk and she has authored and co-authored over 30 academic publications.

Dr Dorn hosts the International Conference in Driver Behaviour and Training and is a Series Editor for Ashgate Publishing.

Dr Dorn currently advises the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety, the Association of Industrial Road Safety Officers, the Department for Transport’s Road Safety Division, the Association of National Driver Improvement Service Providers (ANDISP), the Police Scientific Development Branch, West Midlands Fire Service, several UK police services, Arriva Bus UK and Astra Zeneca Plc.

Driving Research Group

The Driving Research Group (DRG) at Cranfield University is a specialist group within the Human Factors Department consisting of four full time Research Psychologists and several associates headed by Dr Lisa Dorn. The DRG has expert knowledge in and experience of conducting research concerned with road safety. The DRG is unique in the UK in that it applies scientific research and knowledge in order to deliver more effective training for professional drivers. In particular, organisations that employ professional drivers under pressure to meet targets. The DRG also specialises in driver recruitment using psychometric principles. Recent projects include:-

  • Design of a psychometric risk assessment of bus driver behaviour
  • Construction of the UK 's first bus simulator for bus driver training
  • Transfer of training effectiveness of simulator-based training
  • Organisational safety culture in a major passenger services company
  • Design of a behavioural driver training course for a major pharmaceutical company
  • Evaluation of a mentor driver scheme
  • Development of a psychometric risk assessment for fire appliance drivers
